I recently finished reading this to my son in 7th grade. I just loved it. I had trouble tearing up as I read the ending. My son did not have that trouble, but he enjoyed the book as well. If you use Sonlight, they recommend skipping one paragraph in the book where the main character describes the parts of her body that remind her that she is a woman. I appreciated the warning as it was a little more detail than I wanted to cover in a read aloud book. I do not remember the page number, but it occurs fairly early in Part Three. There is no loss of meaning to the story to leave it out. I think the simple way to skip over the details was to read "I looked down and saw that I had become a woman."

I had read this book in high school and thought of it again recently. I searched until I found it (couldn't remember the title) and was not disappointed--it was just as good as I remembered! However, it is definitely young adult in that I finished it in two sittings! But still an enjoyable, "light" read as an adult.
Absolutely wonderful, one of my favorite childhood books, and I still re-read it once every few years.
I am normally not a fan of historical fiction books, but this is the one exception. The simple story captivated me and the writing is beautiful. The main character is a strong female role model, and the story is a timeless classic that everyone can relate to. Great for pre-teens, teens and adults alike.
This book is written down as if a story is being told. I felt as if I was listening to an accomplished story-teller. In other words, it isn't a personal one-on-one read, but that isn't a negative thing.
It is a wonderful book and has a very sweet romance. I love reading re-tailings and tales from other cultures, and this is one I recommend.
I also agree that It isn't for young children (mostly because they wouldn't be able to understand what the author is talking about) but there is nothing vulgar or uncomfortable about the "explicit content" described.
My 7th grade history teacher read this book to the class and I loved it. Reading it again I wasn't sure if it was goning to be as good as my 7th grade-self remembered, but it was just as good, if not better )
It turns out my teacher skipped some parts though (that wheren't apropreate for all ages, nothing too bad though. Probably 14/15+ book) it's not very long and switches P.O.V twice, from the female protagonist and the male love intrest. I personally don't like when books switch P.O.V but in this case I think it added a lot to the story.
I would buy it again in a heart beat! And, I'm not one to recomened books to people, because not everyone has the same teases as me, but I would strongly recomentld this book to anyone!
This book is so different from what I normally read, but my goodness it was refreshing. I loved the history weaved into the tale, and the language mixed into the story. This story is gorgeous. Its the story of a girl who takes her fate into her hands, succeeds, and yet also realizes that even with all of that, money means nothing next to love. The romance was beautiful. This whole story is beautiful. I love the lessons she learns as a woman in the Fatmid era, both in society and personally. I'm going to recommend this to anyone over the age of fourteen (only because of one paragraph in part three where it's a pretty detailed description of a woman's body). I think, though, this is a must read. The note at the end of the book, stating this is based on folklore, makes me wonder more about the origins, so now I'll need to do some more research.

This book was a wonderful book to read and I was so captivated by it that I managed to finish this book in one day. I loved the main character and the fact that she is strong willed and extremely smart immediately made her my favorite character. Also in the beginning she knew that if she didn't do anything she would not have a bright future. So she told her parents the idea and they rejected it but the father came to his senses. Which brings me to my second favorite character Burans father. He must have had a lot of trust in Buran to let her go with her decision. Also the fact that near the end of the story he realized what was wrong with Buran and found a way to fix it. Also the ending might have been different if it wasn't for Burans father. The father also doesn't have a lot of pride unlike his brother. The uncle of Buran is one of my least favorite character because he has so much pride in his seven sons and doesn't have a problem with shoving that fact in his brother's face since he has seven daughters. Also he brags about how he is rich and how he would never allow one of his sons with any of his daughters but at the end he is begging to his brother for a marriage. Also among my least favorite characters are the sons of Burans uncle because of what the eldest said. However in the end Buran got back at the brothers. So overall I loved the book however there were a few awkward moments, but I still like the book.
